Feeling tense? One of the places we often carry stress is in our jaw, and we may not even realize it. Jaw tension is a common response to stress that can lead to headaches, neck pain, and even teeth grinding. So, how's your jaw feeling right now? Is it tight?
If you’re noticing tension, don’t worry – you’re not alone! Many of us unconsciously clench our jaws throughout the day, especially during stressful times. The good news? A little mindfulness can go a long way in releasing that tension.
3 Simple Ways to Release Jaw and Neck Tension
Tongue to the Roof of Your Mouth: A quick, effective trick is to gently press the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, just behind your front teeth. This naturally encourages your jaw to soften and relax. While doing this, take a few deep breaths, letting your jaw feel loose and easy with each exhale.
Gentle Neck Stretches: Often, jaw tension spreads to the neck and shoulders. To prevent this, try soft neck stretches. Slowly tilt your head from side to side, feeling the muscles in your neck lengthen and release. Remember, we’re aiming for ease, not strain.
Unclench and Breathe: Many of us hold our jaws tightly throughout the day without realizing it. Set a gentle reminder to check in with your jaw throughout the day. If it’s clenched, practice unclenching and breathing deeply. This can help break the habit of holding tension and promote overall relaxation.
Why It Matters
Taking a few moments to relax your jaw doesn’t just ease tension in your face – it can have a ripple effect, helping to release tension in your neck and even your upper back. Stress can take a physical toll, but small, mindful adjustments can bring relief.
